May 2005 marked the 100th anniversary for the Town of Cornelius.  From 1990 to 2003 Mecklenburg County's population grew approximately 44%, according to the US Census Bureau.  During that same time period, Cornelius' population grew an astounding 460%. 

Recognizing the growth impact to the Town's infrastructure, the Town of Cornelius Board of Commissioners adopted the Cornelius Centennial Transportation Plan.
